The Ames Surgery Center is a 32,000 square foot building, which has 6 operating rooms, 33 pre/post rooms, and 4 endoscopy rooms. The surgery center offers outpatient procedures, which do not require hospital services.
This project included various piping systems: cold and hot water, reverse osmosis, heating and chilled water, and medical gases. A 4″ water line is softened in the mechanical room before distribution. Reverse osmosis supplies two steam generators and five lab sinks. Two 199,000 BTU water heaters provide 140°F water. Chilled water is circulated through two rooftop chillers. Three boilers supply heating water, distribut- ed by two base-mounted pumps. Installed medical gases include CO2, Oxygen, Medical Vacuum, Sterile Process Air, WAGD, and Medical Air.
The building is conditioned by two large 23,000 CFM air handling units, fifty-five VAV’s, three boilers, two chillers, one air curtain, one fin tube heater,5 cabinet unit heaters and five exhaust fans. The chilled and heating water systems are pumped through ninetotal pumps, six base mounted andthree in-line pumps. Located in the mechanical room are three separate pieces of source equipment for medical vacuum, sterile processing air, and medical air. The oxygen is fed to the building through a bulk storage tank that sits outside, and the CO2 comes from a cylinder rack near the mechanical room.
This project consists of a new 32,000 SF ambulatory surgery center in Ames, Iowa. The center will offer surgical procedures, endoscopy procedures, and off-load eligible ambulatory procedures from Mary Greeley Medical Center’s main campus.
The project team at Ames Surgery Center cranes AHU’s 1 & 2 to the roof of the new building. Each unit weighs 45,000 pounds and is made up of 6 modular sections. Overall, each Air Handler is 51’ Long, 19’ Wide, and 9’ Tall.
All the hydronic pipe and medical gases were designed and installed by ACI Mechanical in a 10 months period.
